Roman Gabriel, Ex-Quarterback for Rams and Eagles, Passes Away at 83

It is with heavy hearts that we report the passing of former Rams and Eagles quarterback, Roman Gabriel. He was 83 years old at the time of his death. 🏈

Roman Gabriel’s name has been etched in the annals of American football history as one of its greatest quarterbacks. His career spanned over a decade, during which he played for two major teams – The Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles.

Born on August 5, 1940 in Wilmington, North Carolina, Gabriel started playing football from an early age showcasing immense talent and promise. After proving himself in college football with North Carolina State University where he earned All-American honors twice, he was drafted by both AFL’s Oakland Raiders and NFL’s Los Angeles Rams in 1962.

Choosing to play for the Rams turned out to be a defining moment for him as it marked the beginning of his illustrious professional career. With exceptional skill and leadership qualities, Roman quickly became one among their star players.

During his tenure with the LA Rams from 1962-1972 , Roman led them to several victories including division championships making him an integral part of their success story.

In recognition of his outstanding performances throughout these years; he received multiple accolades such as being named NFL’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 1969 by Associated Press (AP), Newspaper Enterprise Association (NEA) & Pro Football Writers’ Association (PFWA).

After spending nearly eleven seasons with LA rams ,he moved onto Philadelphia eagles team where he continued exhibiting high level performance till retirement after season ender game against New York Giants on December30th ,1977 .

Post-retirement life saw this legendary player transitioning into coaching roles at various levels while also dabbling into acting occasionally appearing on television series like “The Brady Bunch” or movies like “Skidoo”.

His contributions towards sport were acknowledged when North Carolina Sports Hall Of Fame inducted him as a member during 1974 followed by induction into College Football Hall Of Fame in 1989.

Loss of such an iconic figure has left the football community mourning. His on-field performances, leadership, and contributions to American football have made him a legend whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

Roman Gabriel’s life story serves as a testament to his dedication and love for the game. He was not just an extraordinary athlete but also a man of great character who played his part well both on and off field.

His passing is indeed a significant loss for NFL fraternity & sports world at large; however, memories of this incredible player would forever remain etched in hearts of millions who admired him.
