This is the second Super Bowl championship in the history of the Los Angeles Rams and the first for veterans Matthew Stafford, Aaron Donald and many others. Matthew Stafford led late in the fourth quarter, which ended with a Super Bowl MVP touchdown pass to Cooper Kupp, and the Los Angeles Rams became Super Bowl champions by defeating the Cincinnati Bengals 23–20.
The Rams defeated the Bengals on February 13 in Inglewood, California, to become Super Bowl champions. With the Los Angeles Rams’ victory over the Bengals, the Rams became only the fourth team in league history to win the Super Bowl in a season in which they had the NFL’s top wide receiver on their team. The 1977 Cowboys ended the season with a 27–10 win over the Broncos in Super Bowl XII, making them the first team in NFL history to win the Super Bowl with the top championship receiver on their team.
Cooper Kupp was instrumental in leading the Los Angeles Rams to the Super Bowl with 1,947 yards receiving by the NFL leaders during the regular season. He played a crucial role in their 23–20 victory over the Bengals. Cooper Kupp became the first receiver to pass 2,000 yards in all of his combined games (including the playoffs). He also became the first receiver to win the Super Bowl MVP title in a game in which he did not finish a reception highest total. The LA Rams haven’t changed much since then; Cooper Kupp is still one of the strongest receivers in the NFL, if not the best.
Matthew Stafford turned the passing fight into one of the best in the NFL and led the Los Angeles Rams to one playoff win after another, leading to a 20–17 victory over the 49ers. Now, in quarterback Matthew Stafford’s first season with the Rams, he’s helped lead four post-season wins to become a champion. Quarterback Matthew Stafford looked like an MVP contender early in the season when the Rams started 7-1 but then dropped six turnovers to lose three consecutive November games to playoff teams.
McVeigh thinks openly about his future while balancing his professional and personal life. He is now the youngest manager to win a Super Bowl at 36. Not even McVeigh admitted he was beaten by Bill Belichick three years ago when the Rams lost to the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl with Jared Goff at quarterback. “I’m so proud of this band, just pleased to be associated with it,” said Rams manager Sean McVeigh. The last team to receive the Lombardi Trophy was the Los Angeles Rams.
A win over the Cincinnati Bengals gave the much-travelled franchise its fourth championship and second Super Bowl title. The Rams set up a 15-game winning drive with less than two minutes left to overtake the Bengals 23–20 for the second Super Bowl win in franchise history.
